about the artist
At once evocative of the ladies of la belle epoque, Japanese pillow books, a flapper's secret diary and the opium scented confessions of an exquisitely corseted steampunk revolutionary, the work of Miss Tara Sharpe allows the viewer to go through the keyhole to different points in time in a parallel universe. Each piece summons entire histories whether it's the restless sensuality of the plane of skin just above a stocking, the cradled mythical Padywampus within the rich garden of its own making, the intellectual health of an elaborate pastelle or the simple, aching lines of dead trees on a warm textured field. Her use of colour and extraordinary interpretations of shape and scale is saturated with emotion and a left of centre joie de vivre which can be either whimsical, erotic or heartbreaking.
Early in her career and indeed in her life, Sharpe has managed to evoke the likes of Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele in terms of emotion and power, but her style and perspectives contain a feminine warmth and a high sense of humour while maintaining their strength and their edge.
Sharpe's sense of design shows in her fine art and also translates well into clothing and textile design which offers more than the usual artist-turned-fashion designer fare. Her eye for classic lines and vintage styles combine with her extraordinary wit to a stylish and delightful result.
She also turns a nimble hand to hair and make up design, having done styling for an impressive variety of fashion shows and events.
